Balun
The term balun is an acronym of balanced/unbalanced.
A balanced signal has an equal and opposite signal on each wire in a twisted pair. As the receiving device measures the difference between the signals, interference is cancelled as it is induced in equal measures to each wire in the pair.
Balun from Black Box

Baluns, originally used to convert between coaxial and twisted-pair media, contain small transformers to prevent the reflections that occur when you connect two cables of differing characteristic impedance. The term balun is now used to describe any impedence-matching device.
